2008 Super Bowl–Patriots vs. Giants
Though the Minnesota Vikings are not in the Super Bowl for this year, I am reporting on it here, since it is such an American symbol. They are in Glendale, Arizona this year–and the teams are the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. The Giants won the coin toss as the first team to have the ball.
Kickoff…
1st Quarter–The Giants still have possession of the ball, 8 1/2 minutes into the quarter. The kicked a field goal, and it is good! The Giants now lead 3-0. Patriots now have the ball. They ran for a touchdown pass, but the receiver fumbled the ball. Another pass, but he fumbled. Flag…End of 1st Qaurter.
2nd Quarter–Patriots started out at inches and goal, and got a touchdown in the first two seconds of the second quarter. Then a field goal attempt–it’s good! The Patriots now lead 7-3. Giants have the ball again, and had an incomplete pass. Ball is intercepted by the Patriots, but he was pushed out of bounds. Brady keeps getting tackled as he tries making a pass. The Giants kept on him in a defensive move that kept the Patriots from scoring.
Giants now have the ball, as Bradshaw tried going for a touchdown…1st and 10. 2nd and 6…Jacobs pulls his way for a first down for New York. Manning was tackled, fell, fumbled the ball, and then halfway through the players rushing to get the ball, the flag was thrown, with a penalty on the Patriots. It is still third down. Less than two minutes of the first half, and 4th down. Patriots now have the ball again on the 1st down. And that is the end of the first half. The score at half time is now 7-3, with the Patriots in the lead.
3rd Quarter–The second half kicks off with a challenge from New England that there were 12 men on the field on the Giants’ side. Call is in favor of New England, and will be charged a five yard penalty, and New England will not give up a time out. Giants now have control of the ball. Manning threw a long pass for a received touchdown, but it was incomplete. Darn! (Now, I would love to support the Vikings, but since they are not in the Super Bowl, I figure why not give the Giants my support–just this once?) Jeff Feagles punts the ball, and lands just inches away from the goal line. Five yard penalty to the Giants for a false start. The teams tonight are evenly matched, and the scores have not moved since the first half, and there is about 14 seconds left. Patriots tried a fake hand off, but the Giants were too quick for that, and did not allow them to get far. End of the 3rd Quarter…7-3.
4th Quarter–Well, it’s close to the end of the Super Bowl for 2008. The score is still stuck at 7-3. Giants have the ball. They have moved the ball to the 31 yard line. First down at 12. Gain of seven yards to the 5 yard line for the Giants. Touchdown Giants! Manning threw the ball, and was complete. Field goal is good, with the score now at 10-7, in favor of the Giants. Due to a penalty of holding, the Patriots must start at the 11 yard line, rather than at their own 33. Giants retain the ball again, and Eli had the ball, but then thought he was in trouble so he passed to Burress, but was incomplete. Brady of the Patriots threw a pass, but Moss missed it, and the pass was incomplete for a touchdown. 2nd and goal. 3rd and goal. 2:45 remaining.
Brady throws–Moss catches it in the end zone, and it is a touchdown. Field goal is good, and they now lead 14-10. The ball, in possession of the Giants, has moved closer to the goal line. With a minute left of the game, what will happen? Giants got another touchdown on a pass. Field goal is good, and the score is now 17-14, with the Giants in the lead. With 10 seconds left, it would appear that the Patriots are not going to have that perfect season that they were hoping for.
End of Super Bowl 2008–The New York Giants have won the 42nd Super Bowl with a final score of 17-14. Very tight game, and a very exciting game. I have never watched a Super Bowl before, and I have to say it was really good. Loved the ads! As this is the official end of the football season, the posts will be more erratic, but I will keep you updated occasionally on what the Minnesota Vikings are up to in the coming months. Stay tuned…and I will be back for the regular football season of 2008 this fall! Take care until then!
